Middle and Upper school is a perfect time to get students coding, but by then, students might be at different levels of familiarity. The Computer Science and Engineering program at Horace Mann has created a curriculum so that students at every level of knowledge and achievement will learn to think with computers, instead of simply using computers to convey their thinking.

Online Tutorial: Virtual Robotics

 

With the pandemic and robots being expensive and classroom space consuming, I created a series of online tutorials to do robotics virtually. Assuming students already have access to a computer, the simulation software enables students to practice programming and testing without having physical access to a robot.

Humanoid

 

The Advanced Robotics course introduced students on using the NAO - an autonomous, programmable humanoid robot developed by Aldebaran Robotics. As a final project, a video journal follows a team creation of Shakespeare Palooza.

Girls as Computer Scientists

 

Mentored 3 sisters in their vision to create an inclusive environment to spread their passion of coding knowledge to marginalized communities in the Bronx. Their initial proposal explains the step-by-step progress of creating the “Hack the Bronx” coding hackathon.

Seminar on Identity

 

Teach 6th graders on how to understand identity on a personal level, start conversations about what role identity plays in the world and sharing tools and strategies to respond to injustice and inequality in society.

Upper School Unity Week

 

The Office for Identity, Culture and Institutional Equity (ICIE) at Horace Mann celebrates annually Unity Week - a week dedicated to having conversations and sharing knowledge on identity. Throughout the week, high school students and faculty run workshops on different topics in a variety of forms including film screenings, guided activities, and facilitated discussions. I designed a workshop on Ableism.

Case Study: Middle School Advisory System

 

The Guidance and Counseling department began an initiative to enhance the Advisory program in the 2013-2014 academic year because there was an unclear description of the responsibilities and tasks an advisor had. The goal of the school was to find a suitable advisory system that can assist the faculty in their role as an advisor. I wrote an analysis of the process.

High School Catechism Curriculum

 

Designing a flexible curriculum of meditation, prayer and the arts was a task given by the parish Director of Religious Education to a team of volunteers. I lead the journey that was revised over a three year period that involved high school students and parents.
